The Pleiades: The Sky’s Brightest Star Cluster
Few objects in the night sky are as instantly recognizable as the Pleiades. Known since antiquity as the Seven Sisters, and cataloged as Messier 45, this open cluster of hot young B-type stars sits in the constellation Taurus. At a distance of roughly 444 light-years, it is one of the nearest star clusters to Earth and the nearest Messier object in the entire catalog. Look up on a fall or winter evening and you can spot it with the naked eye as a tight knot of stars — no equipment required.
Why the Pleiades Glows Blue
The stars of the Pleiades are young — around 100 million years old — and massive, shining with an intense blue-white light. But the soft blue haze that surrounds them in long-exposure images is not gas left over from their birth. The cluster is currently passing through a cloud of interstellar dust, and the starlight scatters off those dust grains in the same way sunlight scatters off particles in our own atmosphere. That makes the Pleiades a reflection nebula: the dust does not glow on its own, it simply mirrors the light of these brilliant stars.
The Mosaic Challenge
Photographing the Pleiades is deceptively difficult. The cluster spans about two degrees of sky — four full moons — far too wide for most telescopes to capture in a single frame with any resolution. The image above is a two-panel mosaic. Capturing a mosaic means framing each panel with enough overlap to align them later, shooting both panels under matching sky conditions so brightness and color blend seamlessly, and stitching and processing the result so the seam disappears. It doubles your imaging time and your processing effort, but the payoff is the whole cluster surrounded by its full veil of dust in a single detailed image.

The bright core of the cluster is easy to capture in minutes — the challenge is the faint dust. Sixty-second subframes keep the brilliant stars from saturating while the sheer number of exposures builds up the faint reflection nebulosity hidden between them. Two separate nights of integration went into this mosaic.
Seeing It Yourself
The Pleiades are a naked-eye object from even moderately dark skies, and a stunning binocular target — in fact, a telescope’s narrow field is often too tight to take in the whole cluster. If you want to see the dust, though, you need long-exposure astrophotography. From mid-northern latitudes, the cluster rises high in the evening sky from October through February.
