Some galaxies reward us with elegant face-on spirals, their arms spread like the petals of a cosmic flower. Others give us something stranger — a distorted, edge-on silhouette that sparks the imagination. NGC 4631, better known as the Whale Galaxy, is firmly in the second camp.

A Galaxy Shaped Like Its Namesake
Located approximately 30 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Canes Venatici, NGC 4631 is a barred spiral galaxy seen almost perfectly edge-on. Its slightly warped, asymmetric disk gives it the unmistakable profile of a whale gliding through deep space — hence the nickname that has stuck with it for decades.
The galaxy’s distorted shape is not random. NGC 4631 is gravitationally interacting with its neighbors, particularly the small elliptical galaxy NGC 4627 (sometimes called the “pup”) and the nearby spiral NGC 4656 (the “Hockey Stick Galaxy”). These tidal interactions are pulling and stretching NGC 4631’s disk, triggering intense star formation along its dusty central regions.
A Starburst Factory
What makes NGC 4631 especially interesting to astronomers is its classification as a starburst galaxy. Its central region is churning out new stars at a furious rate, far above the average for a galaxy of its size. The resulting supernova explosions and stellar winds have carved out glowing cavities in the surrounding gas, visible as bright patches along the galactic plane.
X-ray observations have revealed a hot galactic halo — a vast corona of superheated gas surrounding the galaxy, ejected by the combined energy of thousands of supernova detonations over millions of years. This makes NGC 4631 one of the best nearby laboratories for studying how galaxies recycle their gas and regulate star formation.

This image represents 69 exposures of 180 seconds each (just under 3.5 hours total integration), captured across three nights using N.I.N.A. 3 for acquisition and stacked in Siril 1.4.

Observing Tips
If you want to see NGC 4631 for yourself, it is well within reach of a 6-inch or larger telescope under dark skies. Look for it in Canes Venatici, just a few degrees southwest of the famous Whirlpool Galaxy (M51). Through a moderate scope at medium to high power, you will see a long, thin slash of light with a brighter central core. The small companion NGC 4627 appears as a faint fuzzy spot nearby.
Photographically, NGC 4631 is a rewarding target for astrophotographers. Its high surface brightness (for a galaxy) means you can get a recognizable image with relatively short exposures, and its elongated shape makes it stand out beautifully in wide-field frames that also capture NGC 4656 nearby.
The Companion You Might Not Expect
Sharp-eyed observers viewing this image may notice a smaller, fainter galaxy near NGC 4631. That is NGC 4627, an elliptical companion that is physically associated with the Whale Galaxy. The gravitational dance between these two galaxies is responsible for much of the tidal distortion and starburst activity in NGC 4631’s disk.
Even more intriguing, NGC 4631 and NGC 4656 (the Hockey Stick) may be part of a loose group of galaxies, all tugging on each other across millions of light-years. It is a reminder that galaxies, like whales, are social creatures — they rarely travel alone.
